Margin vs Markup — what's the difference?

Margin is your profit as a percentage of the selling price. Markup is your profit as a percentage of the cost. A 40% margin is not the same as a 40% markup — the margin will always be lower for the same profit.

Common formulas

  • Profit = Price − Cost
  • Margin = Profit ÷ Price × 100
  • Markup = Profit ÷ Cost × 100
  • Break-even = Expenses ÷ Profit per unit
